Gilberts of Swindon during The Great War

An Old Town business that has survived two world wars and played a vital role in each, historian Dr Mike Pringle uncovers more - WATCH VIDEO

Gilberts of Old Town was founded in 1866 and has served the people of Swindon with furnishings, carpets and upholstery for nearly 150 years.

In that time, the business has seen Swindon change immeasurably, as well surviving - and playing a key role - in two world wars.

As part of our coverage of the Great War commemorations, SwindonWebTV met up once more with local historian Dr Mike Pringle to find out more about Gilberts during the Great War years, and how one our town's oldest businesses was quickly transformed from a small country craft workshop into a more industrial-sized operation.

Our thanks to Gilberts for making this film possible.
